According to KUER, “Utah’s Youth Suicide Rate Is A Crisis In Need Of A Conversation.”  Utah has the 8th highest rate of youth suicide in the country and is the leading cause of death for youth ages 10-17.  Last week, the Deseret News published a series detailing the tragic phenomenon of teenage suicide in both the rural west as well as some of America’s most affluent high schools, including in places like Palo Alto, California and the Beehive State’s very own Alpine, Utah.  Parents in all settings should understand how environmental pressures can affect teenage mental health, whether in the home, on the athletic field or in the classroom.  They also need to learn the warning signs and how best to help their kids.
